Winslow Homer (1836-1910)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>The Louvre is the book from which we learn to read.\u00a0<\/em>Paul Cezanne<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Louvre is the world&#8217;s most visited museum and one of the world&#8217;s largest.\u00a0<!--more-->It has\u00a0about\u00a0652,300 square feet of exhibition space, 5 floors and 17 wings,\u00a0with\u00a0over 380,000 objects and displays 35,000 works of art.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h5>A museum\u00a0run by artists for artists<\/h5>\n<p>After the French Revolution in 1795, when the Louvre officially opened its doors to the public for the first time, artists were given priority for admission over the general public who were admitted on weekends only. In more recent times, Renoir, Henri Matisse, Degas and countless other artists studied and drew from its master works. Today, it still welcomes artists. Anyone can draw there with few restrictions, you can bring your own small stool and draw on paper up to about A2 size.\u00a0I draw there as much as I can while I am in Paris. There are always places where you can find a quiet corner to draw.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, if you wish to paint you need to get special permission. Many people do, as for\u00a0five-days-a-week, from 9.30am to 1.30pm, painters\u00a0study master works\u00a0using one of the historic easels and stools provided for you. But only\u00a0150 copyists are allowed in the Louvre at a time, and there is at least\u00a0a one-year waiting list for the privilege.
